Collection includes the original of volume one of Knight's diary, dated Sept. 14, 1921--Dec. 31, 1922, and a copy of volume two of the diary, dated Jan. 1, 1923--March 23, 1923, as well as a typescript of both volumes. Collection also includes photographs illustrating the condition of the diary, correspondence concerning the defacement of the diary, and correspondence concerning the efforts made by the Fogg Art Museum and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to discover a way to read material on the damaged pages of the diary. Some essays by Knight are also included in the collection.

Knight was a member of the Stefansson Exploration and Development Company's expedition to Wrangel Island. His diaries, in which he describes his experiences as a member of the expedition, were recovered on the island after his death. Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born on November 3, 1879 in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1897-1902.
